    QUESTIONS ARTISTS ASK

About grants, residencies & funding your work

How do I find grants for artists?

Start with national funders (NEA, state and regional arts councils), then layer in discipline-specific fellowships and emergency funds. The Grants & Fellowships directory lists every major US and international grant we've verified, organized so you can scan for eligibility fast.

How do I apply for an artist residency?

Most residencies use a common application: artist statement, work samples (5–10), CV, and project proposal. Apply to 6–10 per cycle, mix competitive (Yaddo, MacDowell) with accessible regional programs, and treat rejections as data. Our Residencies directory covers fully-funded, self-directed, and international options.

What's the difference between a grant, fellowship, and residency?

A grant is project-based funding you apply for with a defined budget. A fellowship is a person-based award recognizing a body of work — usually unrestricted funds plus community. A residency provides time, space, and often stipend to make new work on-site. Many artists layer all three across a career.

Are all these resources free to use?

The directory is free. Individual resources vary — grants and fellowships are free to apply for (though some charge small fees), most tools have free tiers, and marketplaces charge commission on sales. We flag paid-only tools in the notes.

How often is this directory updated?

Last updated April 2026. We refresh quarterly — removing dead links, adding new opportunities, and re-verifying grant deadlines each cycle.
